Cultural events
When we talk about cultural events in Split, apart from the theatre, numerous museums and galleries, and their exhibitions and permanent layouts, from the tourist offer`s point of view we should definitely mention the importance of cultural and artistic event Split Summer Festival.
This event starts in the middle of July for already 54 years and it includes a great number of cultural events which could be divided into music, drama and dance shows. The program is completed with several quality exhibitions and promotions. Stage design for these shows is set in ceremonial imperial spaces of Diocletian`s palace, historical and artistic complex which was inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979. Quality troupes and beautiful ambient under the summer sky, will stay imprinted in memory of all art lovers.
Museums
Split Town Museum with its permanent layout follows the development of the city through centuries. Although the Museum deals with a great number of activities, the most important ones are gathering, protection and custody of materials witnessing urban, economic, artistic, cultural and historical growth of Split.
Museum of Croatian Archaeological Monuments is one of the kind in Croatia, and it deals with research, gathering, presentation and study of the remains of Croatian material and spiritual culture in the Middle Ages. One of the most interesting parts of the layout are epigraphic monuments with engraved names of Croatian monarchs and prelates.
Ethnographic Museum follows the impact of tradition on modern culture of life, gathering and presenting rich Dalmatian folk heritage. Apart from the original exhibits very impressive are modern views of traditional heritage.
Croatian Maritime Museum owns a collection of exhibits from the first half of the 20th century. Model ships, nautical equipment, arms, medals, are just one small part of the rich and various museum layouts.
Archaeological Museum is the oldest museum institution in Croatia, founded in 1820. The museum carries out regular archaeological research and owns 150 000 artifacts deployed in several collections. The greatest number of exhibits, 70 000 of them, are in the collection of antique and medieval coins.
Galleries
Art Gallery is at the same time the Museum of Modern Art. The collection includes 2000 works of art from the most important Dalmatian artists from the 14th century till today. Most works in the collection are modern, and because of the lack of exhibition space the whole collection has not yet been presented to the public.
Ivan Meštrović Gallery is dedicated to life and work of one of the greatest Croatian artists, and the place itself has been built to his own design. The gallery presents around 200 master`s works located partly in gallery space and partly in the park in front of it.
All aforementioned relating to cultural events is just a part of Split rich cultural offer. Visit to any of the mentioned events and exhibition spaces, gives an insight into the efforts of people from this region to save their identity and cultural authenticity. |
